Unsettling Grounds is an augmented reality exhibition showcasing experimental and monumental works by Black, Brown, Indigenous & rural artists in and around the Charlottesville, VA Woolen Mills area.

Dream Syndicate partnered with the artists and administrators involved to strategize, concept, design, and develop the Unsettling Grounds AR app (iOS & Android) and five interactive and fully immersive monumental AR experiences: The Wheel, The Loom, Three Sisters, Melting Monument, and The Sundial.

Each AR experience is interacted with through physical movement, asking the user to become an active participant in the functioning of each virtual monument. Movement, position, and gaze all influence how the monument reacts and how the story of each will unfold.

The app is an interactive storytelling tool, engaging users in physical exploration of the Woolen Mills campus to uncover hidden histories of lesser-known struggles for freedom. Monuments are missing; voices are silenced. Unsettling Grounds makes visible and audible the hidden past.
